Khiva’s inner city, Ichan-Kala, is walled and survives almost intact. The streets are narrow and the mosques and madrasas sit close together, so it is a city to walk.
Khiva is far from Tashkent: the night train is the usual way, and tours run two days. It suits travellers who come for history and architecture.
Summer days are very hot — mornings and evenings are the comfortable hours.
