Day trips to the mountains from Tashkent: how to choose

Day trips to the mountains differ in how far you walk, how long the drive is and when they work best. Here is how to pick one.

Start with one question: how far do you want to walk?

Day trips fall into two kinds. The first is getting somewhere and walking around it: a shore, a forest, a waterfall. Not much walking, and fine with children.

The second is a summit or a long route — ten to fifteen kilometres and real climbing in a day. That needs some fitness, and your shoes matter.

The tour page says how the day goes. If it says "ascent" or "trekking", it is the second kind.

Season: when each one works

Spring is when the waterfalls run full and the hills are green. Paths can be wet, but the views are at their best.

Summer is for escaping the heat of Tashkent. The mountains are cooler, but the midday sun is strong: water, a hat, sun cream.

Autumn brings clear air, fewer people and comfortable temperatures. For many it is the best season.

Winter is snow and skiing. Road conditions vary, so an agency may adjust the programme.

What the price covers, and what it does not

A day trip usually includes transport and a guide. Meals, entrance tickets and rented equipment vary — sometimes included, sometimes not.

Every tour page lists what is included and what is not. Read it before booking: two tours at the same price can differ by a lunch.

Prices are per person; you choose how many seats when you book.

What to bring

Comfortable shoes matter most. There is little flat ground in the mountains, and sandals or new shoes make a long day longer.

Water and something to eat. Many routes pass no shops.

A layer for the top: it is cooler than the city up there, and windier.

Cash — cards are not accepted everywhere.

If the tour page lists what to bring, follow it: the agency knows the route.

How booking works

You pick a date and the number of seats, then go to payment. The seats are held for you for 30 minutes — pay within that time.

Pay in full by card, or in instalments through Uzum Nasiya. With instalments the tour still counts as paid in full.

Cancellation terms are set per tour and shown before you pay. Some are free to cancel; on others nothing comes back inside 48 hours of departure.
